Tommy Druen: Quest for authenticity Previous Column: High school basketball By Tommy Druen In 2014, my wife surprised me with tickets to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Concert. I've been an avid Nirvana fan for nearly three-quarters of my life. While I was too young to see them prior to Kurt Cobain's death, witnessing them inducted into the Hall felt like the next best thing. Our trip to New York City was fantastic for several reasons, not the least of which was the hotel my wife had booked. The Library Hotel, situated in midtown Manhattan, boasts over 6,000 books and assigns each room based on a section of the Dewey Decimal System. It's a nerd's paradise. Our room was filled with books from the 800 section, dedicated to literature. Intrigued by the cover art, I picked up a book of essays entitled "Eating the Dinosaur," my introduction to Chuck Klosterman, who has since become one of my favorite authors. Mosquitoes: ready or not, here they come Mosquitoes spread West Nile virus and other pathogens, which means that bug repellents do more than just prevent itchy bites and ruined campouts. And in regions where malaria and mosquito-borne dengue fever are endemic, repelling mosquitoes can save lives. DEET is hard to beat. It was first patented by the U.S. Army and has been in commercial use since the 1950s. Worries about its safety have tapered off, possibly because people are more concerned that a bite could make them sick. Many repellents have bright stickers that highlight the DEET content. May is Motorcycle and Bike Safety Awareness Month From Erin G. Eggen Frankfort, KY - Whether you ride, pedal or drive, Kentuckians are reminded during National Motorcycle and Bike Safety Awareness Month to watch out for each other as spring weather draws more highway users across the state. "We typically see more and more motorcycles and bicycles riding along with us this time of year," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "And we encourage everyone to share the road so that we all make it to our destination safely - every trip, every time." The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind all road users to work together to help prevent crashes, injuries and deaths on Kentucky roadways. A motorcycle or bicycle is a vehicle with all of the rights and responsibilities of any motor vehicle; however, as one of the smallest vehicles on the road, a motorcycle or bicycle may be in a vehicle's blind spots.
